Petra is in the heart of the desert in Jordan. It is full of magic and beauty from another time, and now it's time to plan for a one-of-a-kind trip. Packing for a desert excursion is entirely different than preparing for a tropical vacation or a ski trip. Now that you've made one of the best decisions of your life to go to Petra, I have compiled the perfect packing list for you.
Light Clothes
This may sound counterintuitive, but pack lightweight, long clothes. My favorite clothes to wear in the desert are light linen pants or even long skirts that completely cover my legs to protect them from the sun and wind. In addition to long pants, I always wear light long-sleeved shirts or at least short sleeves. I know this sounds a bit odd when we are talking about clothes in a hot desert pants, and long sleeves don't make a lot of sense, but you can thank me later.
Walking Shoes
A great pair of walking shoes will make your fantastic trip 100 times better. Petra is a vast city and a mainly walking destination. You can spend hours walking through the historic city and hike through the desert mountains. Trying to walk through the city in uncomfortable shoes will lead to a trip that will be memorable for all the wrong reasons.
Head Coverings
A wide-brimmed hat will be one of the best things you can bring to the desert. It will protect your head, neck, and face. If you prefer not to wear a hat, you can always wear a headscarf that will add a layer of protection from the sand. A combination of the two will significantly improve your experience in the desert.
Toiletries
Sunscreen is a must to have on your trip to the desert. It can help when you have skin exposed to the sun outside of your long clothes. It will also help keep your face from being burnt under the harsh desert sun. In addition to sunscreen, bug spray will be your best friend. There are lots of tiny annoying bugs that could potentially cause itchy bites. The last thing to ensure in your toiletry bag is lotion and chapstick. You will find that the desert dries you out, and you'll be thankful for the reprieve from the dryness.
Water Filter Bottle
Something that I've started doing is taking a bottle with a filter that purifies my water. Drinking water in most places is extremely safe and sanitary, but there is always the off chance that the water has safe but different bacteria that could upset your system. If you are ever uneasy, you can always boil water and put it through a water purification system. I can recommend some brands like Grayl or LifeStraw that have been a life changer on my travels.
All of these essentials are in addition to my go tos like portable chargers, electronics bags, and first aid kits. If you are ready to be transported to another world of magic, history, and stunning sites, it's time to book your trip to Petra, Jordan. Let's work together to plan one of the most spectacular trips of your life by scheduling a consultation today. I'm excited to work together for you to explore this magnificent destination.
