Writer's picture: ErinErin

This week we are traveling back in time to a city that has been touched by several different civilizations and cultures and dates all the way back to the sixth century. It has been under Persian, Roman, Byzantine, and Slavic rule, shaping its history, culture, and society. This city on the Maritsa River is Plovdiv. It is the second largest city in Bulgaria that holds much of the region's history.

Ancient Theatre

The most famous cultural landmark dates back to the Roman Empire, which is the Ancient Theatre. It is positioned high on a hill above the city. When you visit the theatre, you can take in performances by the Plovdiv Opera. From the marble seats, not only will you see the play, but you'll be looking out over the whole city center. The Rhodope mountains backdrop the city in the distance, which is truly a site to see.

One of the three hills that surround Plovdiv, Nebet Tepe, is the most iconic destination of the old city. Atop this hill, you will find what remains of the ancient city. The Nebet Tepe became the center of the town dating all the way back to the 12th century. When you visit the lookout hill today, you will find the remains of a fortress wall and tower. There is also a secret tunnel from the fourth century leading all the way down to the Maritsa River.

The creative destination of the city of Plovdiv is Kapana. This area is filled with delicious restaurants, galleries, and shops. This is the best place to take in the city's art and culture scene. Before the 1990s, this area was full of abandoned houses and broken parking lots, and it was transformed into the destination it is today.

Plovdiv is a city where ancient history and modern culture seamlessly blend together. From the majestic ancient theatre that offers panoramic views of the city, to the historic ruins of Nebet Tepe that tell stories from centuries ago, every corner of Plovdiv invites you to step back in time while enjoying its present-day vibrancy. The artistic hub of Kapana, with its lively streets, eclectic shops, and bustling restaurants, showcases the city's ability to reinvent itself while staying true to its roots. Whether you're exploring its ancient landmarks or its creative spaces, Plovdiv offers a timeless experience where the past and present coexist in harmony.
