Contrary to the name, Iceland is full of green fields, cities, lush rivers, waterfalls, and lakes. However, there are still remnants of glaciers that you can discover today. The most famous is located in Vatnajökull National Park near the city of Hofn. The most famous lake is the Jökulsárlón Ice Lagoon.
The Glacier Lagoon is a great way to see a glacier up close and personal. In Glacier Lagoon, chunks of the glaciers crash into the lake below. The giant icebergs float out to the ocean. You can explore the lake on an amphibious vehicle, where you board on land and drive almost close enough to touch the glacier.
On Diamond Beach, you will not only see what seems to be diamonds floating in the ocean, but you may see wildlife explore the new additions to their environment. One of the most common animals you may see are seals swimming and birds swooping around you. This is just across the road from the main lake and is usually less crowded than the lakeside.
During the winter and fall, you can take the opportunity to explore and hike on the glacier to land that many don't get to explore. You'll venture into ice caves and learn more about the glaciers that make up Iceland. These tours are weather dependent as they need to be cold enough to ensure that the glaciers are safe to hike.
If you venture away from the iceberg lagoon, you'll find endless amounts of hiking trails that wind and wrap and lead you up the mountain, along rivers, and to a specular view of the lake. All of these outdoor activities are sure to leave you wanting more.
