Writer's picture: ErinErin

Cyprus is an ideal travel destination for many reasons. It has water, beautiful views, and rich history. Plus, the island is unique because it is split between Turkish and Greek cultures. What has come from this split? Well, mostly peace, but it also helped to create some incredible dishes to try while you're there! If your travel adventures are fueled by food, Cyprus is the place for you. This island was made for foodies.

Gemista

There are so many delicious dishes to be eaten on your trip that it is hard to narrow it down, but the best place to start are these five dishes:

Makaronia Tou Fournou

This dish is made of large pasta tubes, béchamel sauce, and a tomato minced pork sprinkled with dry mint. The top is dusted with cheese to make it crunchy, and it is usually served with a salad. In Greece, this dish is called pastitsio; the Cypriot version differs in its use of cheese.

Koupepia and Gemista

The first thing to know about this dish is that Koupepia means stuffed wine leaves. However, this dish is made of minced meat, rice, onions, tomatoes, and a mixture of herbs. Koupepia and gemista can be found on any grandmother's table. It is a Cryriot favorite.

Souvlakia

Ttavas

This means clay pot, where Cryproits make their traditional meals. These meals can contain anything, but you will mostly find lamb, rice, vegetables, and potatoes in "clay pots." All of the ingredients are stewed together and seasoned with cumin. This traditional dish has been around for centuries and is still enjoyed by most families in Cyprus.

Souvlakia and Sheftalia

This is a spin off of a Greek dish called Souvlaki. It is made with chunks of grilled meat on a skewer and a large amount of fresh salad. The more modern way to eat this is in a pita pocket. Since it is easy and portable is very popular with the locals.

Halloumi

This is the most popular dish in Cyprus. It is a cheese that is produced by combining a mixture of goats and sheep milk. Once it is mixed, it is set in a rennet until ready. Halloumi can be melted, fried, or eaten as is.

These are just a few foods that can be tried while in Cyprus. Schedule a consultation to begin planning your trip and try all these amazing dishes.
